What is Periodontal Surgery?
Periodontal surgery, or gum surgery, is used to treat gum diseases and conditions. This procedure may be used to treat gingivitis, periodontitis, and similar conditions.
With a periodontal procedure, our dentists can resolve multiple dental issues. We can eliminate bacterial activity, remove deep and stubborn deposits that are not reachable with fine hand instruments, prevent bone loss and more.
Depending on your unique needs, our dentists may recommend one of the following procedures:
- Flap surgery
- Bone grafting
- Guided tissue regeneration
- Tissue grafting
- Laser therapy
- Tissue-stimulating proteins
We recommend scheduling a consultation to create a treatment plan for your specific needs. After a consultation, we will be able to determine which of these procedures will work to treat your periodontal concerns. Every operation is different, but most gum surgeries take about 1-2 hours.
How to Recover from Periodontal Surgery
After receiving any kinds of periodontal surgery, you will receive instructions for your recovery. Depending on the procedure, you may need to take certain medications or rest for more or less time. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the recovery process, you have 24h access to our dentists. Therefore, don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any concerns.
In most cases, our dentists will recommend taking a few days off from work or school so you can rest. You should avoid strenuous activities and exercise in the first day or so after surgery. You will need to keep the area clean with mouthwash or salt water. It’s also a good idea to avoid hard foods.
